GOLD STANDARD STEEL FROM KINGSPAN
Kingspan Structural Products have been awarded the Gold Standard under the Steel Construction Sustainability Charter (SCSC). Sustainability is currently a hot topic across the construction industry, and this influential charter aims to develop steel as an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable construction element.
Steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world, with over 40% of “new” production made from recycled steel, and Kingspan Structural Products have long been committed to setting standards in sustainable steel construction. They have developed a fully integrated management system to ensure important issues of safety, quality and the environment are properly taken into account, all of which are necessary in order to achieve Charter status.
Ian Hodgson, Managing Director of Kingspan Structural Products said “We are very proud to have achieved such a high standard. Sustainability is an important issue for us, and we have worked hard to develop good sustainable practice throughout the company.”
The Gold Standard was awarded after a successful audit under SCSC rules. This included demonstrating the implementation of a range of management systems, including OHSAS 18001, BS EN ISO 14001 and BS EN ISO 9001.
The international OHSAS and ISO standards are management system frameworks that provide a template for best practice and formal recognition when this is achieved. OHSAS 18001 deals with health and safety issues, ISO 14001 with balancing successful business against minimal environmental impact, and ISO 9001 with quality standards.
Other important elements needed to meet the Gold Standard include the institution of policies to manage energy usage and to ascertain whether suppliers have their own sustainability standards.
Kingspan Structural Products produce a range of steel products such as purlins, rails, composite steel floordecks and cold-rolled channel sections.
They are a member of the Kingspan group of companies, who between them have won a number of sustainability awards. These include Kingspan Insulated Panels winning Best Sustainable Business Practice at the 2007 Building Magazine awards.
